Need tips for getting into Investment Banking in the Los Angeles area?
This might be long but since it’s the most important thing in my life, kindly bear w/ me and read the whole thing before you comment…
I’m an incoming senior @ UCLA and have an aggregate GPA of around 3.40 as an econ major(4-5 accntg classes as well). My sole aim in undergrad has been to work as an analyst in a bulge bracket/ middle market I-bank. For that, I’ve had internships in the past 12 months at a CPA firm, a commercial bank (credit dept.) and a middle market investment bank/ investments firm (Cash mgmt group). I’ve honestly gained invaluably from all these places and feel that the ‘Work Exeperience’ section in my resume is quite strong.
However, I’ve heard that most of the bulge brackets will not even look at that section if your GPA doesn’t touch the 3.50 benchmark. Moreover, given the current market scenario, I feel that it’s extremely important for you to know someone working in the bank, in a good postition. Since I don’t have either of the above mentioned things, I have a feeling that all my efforts will go waste and I won’t be called up for the on-campus interviews (which start in about a month). That is my main concern at the moment. Also, even though my accntg knowledge isn’t bad at all, my grades in this subject aren’t great. That’s mainly coz I can’t handle 2-3 finals on a single day(that happened with me every’frickin’time i took an accntg class). Anyway the point is, if I do end up getting an interview then I feel fairly confident about acing it. As per the advice given to me by a couple of seniors, I read a few vault guides, the wetfeet, monkey business and became a daily reader of WSJ and my job functions in the current office have made me extremely informative about the current market happenings. So I hope that all these will help in the near future.
Please provide any sort of guidance/ tips as to what else can be done by me to get to those interviews.
